Memory Foam: Why is memory foam popular? Part 1

Western cultures, including North America, have been interested in quality sleep and more comfortable sleep, and have continuously developed mattresses through research.

In particular, in the last 10 years, the mattress trend in North America and Europe has evolved from spring mattresses to memory foam mattresses that more comfortably envelop the body.

Traditional spring mattresses do not absorb the body's curves 100%, resulting in some pressure on the body that can hinder comfortable sleep, but memory foam mattresses are evaluated as a one-step improvement.

Recently, products that have overcome the disadvantage of memory foam not emitting heat and have improved this are appearing. In line with this trend, Olee sleep has developed and applied cooling gel technology to mattresses.

 Inner spring mattress

A spring mattress is a type of mattress that uses springs as its support layer. (There are also mattresses that place a thin layer of foam on top of the spring support layer to add cushioning.)

Springs are elastic materials, so a spring mattress transmits its elasticity to the body with even the slightest movement, unlike a memory foam mattress. The same can be said for foam, which is also highly elastic.

During sleep, the recoil and elasticity that the body receives from even the slightest tossing and turning is greater in a spring mattress than in a memory foam mattress. Additionally, because the durability of springs is relatively weaker, there is a problem of decreased support when the durability of the springs has been worn out.

 Latex mattress

Latex is a mattress made from natural rubber latex, which has the advantage of being a natural material with good antibacterial properties. However, most latex mattresses on the market are made from synthetic latex, which also has its downsides.

Firstly, due to its low heat tolerance, latex mattresses cannot be used with heating pads or similar bedding for warmth, and they are also vulnerable to moisture and require careful maintenance in household environments. If not properly managed, the lifespan of a latex mattress can be relatively short, typically around 3-4 years.

In addition, latex mattresses are heavier than memory foam or spring mattresses, making it difficult to move or transport them when moving or relocating.

 Memory foam mattress

Memory foam mattresses have the advantage of absorbing tossing and turning during sleep, minimizing any rebound through the memory foam.

In addition, a hybrid mattress is typically made by combining coil springs with other materials such as foam or latex. These hybrid mattresses combine the support of springs with the comfortable cushioning of foam or latex, providing a comfortable yet supportive sleeping surface.

Spring coils are typically made of steel and are arranged in various shapes and numbers depending on the mattress. The coils provide durability and support, and can move to conform to the shape of the body due to their lack of friction.

Other materials such as memory foam or latex are placed on top of the spring coils, reducing the sound of the coils and providing a quieter sleeping surface. These materials also soften the hard feel of the spring coils and conform to the curves of the body, providing comfortable cushioning.

The technological shift from spring mattresses to memory foam mattresses is not a temporary trend, but rather a natural change for achieving perfect sleep.
